Course Descriptions


DSCC courses are offered in rotation. The frequency of course offerings is designated by (F) for fall semester, (Sp) for spring semester, (Su) for summer semester, or As Needed; location is designated by (Dyersburg) for Dyersburg, (GCC) for DSCC Gibson County Center and (JNC) for DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County. The frequency and location of courses are listed in the following descriptions; while DSCC makes every attempt to offer courses as indicated, course offerings and locations are subject to change.

Some courses offered at DSCC are designed for transfer for completion of a bachelor’s degree while other courses focus on specific career skills rather than meeting requirements for transfer. Courses to increase career skills are designated as **Not Part of a Tennessee Transfer Pathway** in the course description.

    This course is a study of supervisory and management functions with focus on planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling in healthcare organizations. Managerial techniques to supervise, motivate, counsel, lead, train, and communicate with staff in health information services are especially emphasized.     This course is designed to focus on quality improvement, information integrity, information governance, and clinical documentation improvement in a variety of healthcare settings. Emphasis will be placed on implementation of a quality improvement model, tools, techniques and activities of acute care hospitals, hospital outpatient and emergency departments, ambulatory care settings, and other healthcare facilities. Leadership and team building skills will be promoted.     This course covers the basic principles of coding with the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding system, including structure and rules. Instruction will also be given in use of HCPCS Level II coding, including structure and rules.     This course focuses on advanced topics in diagnosis and procedural coding, including the current ICD Coding system and CPT/HCPCS. The course will concentrate on application of Official Coding Guidelines, development of diagnosis sequencing skills, and understanding of advanced coding principles, including the clinical documentation improvement function.     This course is a study of more complex four-part harmonic progressions in all chord positions including chords with added ninths, elevenths and thirteenths. Advanced types of modulation and chord structures such as augmented sixth chords and Neapolitan sixths are studied and included in written assignments which are entered into Finale and Sibelius. A brief study of atonal, twelve-tone serial composition and quartal/quintal composition will be included. 3 lecture hours.

    Prerequisites: First inform your doctor and observe these guidelines: 1) Under 30: You can start exercising if you have had a checkup within the past year and the doctor found nothing wrong with you. 2) Between 30 & 39: You should have a checkup within three months before you start exercising. The examination should include an electrocardiogram [EKG] taken at rest. 3) Between 40 & 49: Same as for the 30-39 group with one important addition. Your doctor should also take an EKG to check your heart while you are exercising. [This is called a stress test.] Your pulse rate during this test should approach the level it would during aerobic workouts.

    This course focuses on the principles of aerobic conditioning designed to promote heart-lung endurance. The total fitness concept combines simple dance steps with up-tempo aerobic movements, resulting in a complete conditioning program. 2 hours per week.
