Elementary Education (K-5) Emphasis, A.S.T.

The Tennessee Board of Regents two-year and four-year institutions developed the K-5 emphasis for the Associate of Science in Teaching degree to ensure a seamless transfer among the 19 TBR institutions of higher education. This emphasis is common among all TBR institutions and is considered as fulfilling the coursework for the freshman and sophomore years at those institutions.
To facilitate success in this program, all students should enroll in ORN 1010 - Orientation: Learning to Succeed during their first semester at DSCC.

Attainment of 2.75 cumulative grade point average.
An ACT score of 21 or successful completion of the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core). DSCC’s recipient code is 3262. Use this code to request that official scores be sent to the Office of Records. MTSU requires a 22 ACT score.
Students transferring to a public university in Tennessee may need to meet additional requirements to gain admittance to the university.
Satisfactory rating on an index of suitability for the teaching profession.

**Students may take any approved U.S. History course; however, those who plan to transfer to UT Chattanooga must take one World History course.
***Students who intend to transfer to UT Chattanooga should take MATH 1530 - Introductory Statistics to meet the mathematics general education requirement. Students who intend to transfer to UT Martin should take MATH 1710 - Precalculus Algebra.
****Students who plan to transfer to ETSU must take an Educational Psychology course.
