Paramedic Certificate

The Paramedic is the advanced Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Provider. The Paramedic has successfully completed the advanced EMT requirements plus the educational requirements for licensure as a Paramedic. The Paramedic Program is a twelve-month, three-semester Program that includes classroom, laboratory, clinical, field and internship learning opportunities. Paramedics are responsible for all basic EMT skills plus advanced life support (ALS) skills such as medication administration, endotracheal intubation, ECG monitoring and interpretation, defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion, comprehensive patient assessment and advanced management of medical and trauma emergencies in all age groups. Paramedics are licensed by the Tennessee Department of Health, Division of Emergency Medical Services.

Prerequisites:

  • Must be a licensed AEMT in Tennessee or National Registry AEMT
  • Must complete entrance criteria, which include completing a computer-based exam covering reading, mathematics and EMT knowledge, a psychological component, and an oral interview
  • Show proficiency in reading and English for college entrance
  • If required: MATH course that satisfies mathematics competencies 1-5, ENGL 0810  and READ 0810  

The DSCC Paramedic Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP, www.coaemsp.org).
