Special Education Emphasis (Tennessee Transfer Pathway), A.S.T.

The Special Education emphasis provides students various foundational courses in the field of special education. The student completes the first two years of requirements leading toward a baccalaureate degree.

To facilitate success in this program, all students should enroll in ORN 1010 - Orientation: Learning to Succeed  during their first semester at DSCC.

**Students who plan to transfer to UT Knoxville or UT Chattanooga are strongly encouraged to take non-U.S. history courses to fulfill the general education history requirement.

***Students who plan to transfer to UT Knoxville should take an intermediate foreign language course rather than MATH 1410 - Number Concepts for Teachers.

****Students who plan to transfer to UT Knoxville should take an intermediate foreign language course rather than the additional lab science course.

Note: During the sophomore year, students planning to teach should meet the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core) or ACT testing requirements for their transfer institution.

Note: These courses are to prepare candidates for SE Interventionist K-8 and SPED Comprehensive K-12 licensure programs. Students transferring to a University of Tennessee or Tennessee Board of Regents university may need to meet additional requirements to gain admittance to that university’s Special Education program. Check with that university for specific program requirements. Students transferring to UT Knoxville need to be formally admitted to the program during Semester 4.

Additional information regarding foreign language:

At some universities, foreign language may be required in certain programs that lead to the Bachelor of Science degree. Complete information regarding foreign language requirements at each university may be found on the transfer and articulation websites of the Tennessee Board of Regents and the University of Tennessee Systems. Community college students are encouraged to be familiar with foreign language requirements at the universities and, if applicable, complete the requirements before transferring.
