Health Sciences Concentration, A.A.S.


The Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Sciences provides a pathway for students who are currently enrolled in or have completed a certificate-level program in a Health Sciences discipline from any accredited community or technical college, or who are currently credentialed as allied health/nursing practitioners, to continue their formal education and earn an Associate of Applied Science degree.

Allied Health Sciences discipline-specific core credits may be earned by current enrollment in appropriate Allied Health Sciences courses, transferring credits earned in a health science-related program or an allied health sciences certificate program from a community college, or portfolio assessment of college-level learning related to an allied health discipline.

Certificates that can be applied toward this degree include:

  • Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Certificate
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate 
  • Electronic Health Record Certificate
  • Healthcare Technician (CCMA) Certificate
  • Medical Coding (CCA) Certificate 
  • Paramedic Certificate  

This major is specifically designed for students who plan to enter the workforce after graduation.

To facilitate success in this program, all students should enroll in ORN 1010 - Orientation: Learning to Succeed  during their first semester at DSCC.

*** Students may apply credits earned in excess of 30 credit hours for an Allied Health Program, or Health Sciences Certificate, designated general education courses (BIOL 2020, MATH elective, PHYS elective), or ALHS electives in place of HIMT 1300 and/or HIMT 1308, or AHSC electives from those listed in the catalog. However, it is important that the credits are appropriate and add value toward the chosen career path and should be approved by the academic advisor.
