Elementary Education (K-5) Emphasis, (Tennessee Transfer Pathways), A.S.T.

The Tennessee Board of Regents two-year and four-year institutions developed the K-5 emphasis for the Associate of Science in Teaching degree to ensure a seamless transfer among the 19 TBR institutions of higher education. This emphasis is common among all TBR institutions and is considered as fulfilling the coursework for the freshman and sophomore years at those institutions.

To facilitate success in this program, all students should enroll in ORN 1010 - Orientation: Learning to Succeed during their first semester at DSCC.

⁽¹⁾ Students who plan to transfer to Christian Brothers University are encouraged to complete POLS 1030: American Government. Students who plan to transfer to UTK are encouraged to complete ECON 2010: Macroeconomics.

⁽²⁾ Students who plan to transfer to UTK are encouraged to complete one U.S. History course as part of this requirement. Students who plan to transfer to MTSU are encouraged to complete a World History course. APSU requires students to complete one World History course. Students who plan to transfer to U of M must complete a sequence (either HIST 1110/1120 or HIST 2010/2020.

⁽³⁾ One Natural Science general education elective must be in Biology. One Natural Science general education elective must be non-Biology. UTK recommends that students complete Astronomy for the non-Biology with lab requirements.

⁽⁴⁾ Students who plan to transfer to APSU must take an Educational Psychology course. Students who plan to transfer to ETSU are encouraged to take Developmental Psychology or Educational Psychology.

⁽⁵⁾ Area of emphasis Natural Science Elective must be a Physical Science course in Earth Science, Geology, or Astronomy (with lab). Students who plan to transfer to UTC are required to take a Physical Science course.

Students earning an AST degree must meet the following additional degree requirements:

Attainment of a 2.75 cumulative grade point average (GPA)
ACT composite score of 21 (or SAT score of 1080) or higher or successful completion of approved standardized examination (Praxis Core) for admission to the university’s College of Education
Satisfactory ratings on an index of suitability for the teaching profession (disposition forms) DSCC AST Disposition Assessment Form
Students transferring to a public university in Tennessee may need to meet additional requirements to gain admittance to the university
