General Education Requirements:

Total: 60 Semester Hours

Footnotes:

(1) Students should confer with their advisor or a representative of the university to which they intend to transfer to determine the recommended history courses.

(2) PHYS or CHEM are recommended. Students who intend to transfer to UTC should take either a calculus-based or non-calculus-based Physics sequence. UTM requires Chemistry sequence 1010/1020 and PHYS sequence. UoM also requires Intro to Biology and lab in place of PHYS 1040. Students interested in transferring to APSU should take CSCI 1010/1011 or CSCI 2000 or a similar Intro Programming course.

(3.) For lists of eligible electives, see the appropriate section of the General Education Core Curriculum Requirements .

(4.) Students should consult the catalog of their transfer institution for guidance in selecting elective hours.

(5) One course must be in literature.

Additional notes: Students who intend to transfer to MTSU, ETSU, or UTC, secondary education program should follow the Mathematics AS TTP and not the AST TTP. ETSU, and UTC recommend and MTSU requires that students take education courses after transfer. Students interested in transferring to UTK have two options: a degree and teaching licensure.

Option 1: BS majoring in Math with a minor in Math Education - do not use this TTP; follow the Math TTP.

Option 2 BS in Education with a concentration in Math. If you are interested in this option, follow this Secondary Education -Math TTP.

Additional Requirements for Education Programs:

Students who intend to take the Praxis Core exam are encouraged to take MATH 1420 or Math 1530 to prepare. While a C or better is not required to receive an AST, most 4-year institutions require a C or better in Math courses.

Additional Degree Requirements

Students earning an AST degree must meet the following additional degree requirements:

  • Attainment of a 2.75 cumulative grade point average (GPA)
  • ACT Composite score of 21 (or SAT score of1080) or higher or successful completion of approved standardized examination (Praxis Core) for admission to the university’s College of Education.
  • Satisfactory ratings on an index of suitability for the teaching profession (disposition forms)

Students transferring to a public university in Tennessee may need to meet additional requirements to gain admittance to the university.

NOTE: If you plan on transferring to MTSU, ETSU, or UTC for Secondary Education Mathematics follow the Mathematics AS TTP rather than this TTP.
