Course Descriptions

DSCC courses are offered in rotation. The frequency of course offerings is designated by (F) for fall semester, (Sp) for spring semester, (Su) for summer semester, or As Needed; location is designated by (Dyersburg) for Dyersburg, (GCC) for DSCC Gibson County Center and (JNC) for DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County. The frequency and location of courses are listed in the following descriptions; while DSCC makes every attempt to offer courses as indicated, course offerings and locations are subject to change.

Some courses offered at Dyersburg State Community College are designed for transfer for completion of a bachelor’s degree while other courses focus on specific career skills rather than for transfer. Courses to increase career skills are designated as **Not Part of a Tennessee Transfer Pathway** in the course description.

    This course explores practices that early childhood professionals can apply to develop a more inclusive and accessible environment for children ages birth through eight. It provides students with skills to include children of all abilities through appropriate arrangement of the environment.     This course is a supervised clinical experience with a minimum of 15 clock hours in instruction and 90 clock hours in a Clinical Site approved by the Department (accredited agency, 3-star or department approved site). Up to 45 hours may be completed in the student’s employment site with department approval. This course focuses on the student’s demonstration of competencies that produce positive developmental outcomes for young children ages birth through eight. 1 hour lecture, 2 hours laboratory.

    This course is an internship that provides evidence the student is capable of acting as a team leader in managing the emergency care and treatment of an injured or ill patient at the paramedic level. The student will demonstrate competency in this role. While all skill sets should have been achieved prior to initiating the internship, patient types and pathologies may be used from this experience to complete the minimum graduation academic requirements as set forth in CoAEMSP accreditation documents and the Tennessee Office of EMS. 5 hours laboratory.

  • EMSR 0100 - Emergency Medical Responder

    Prerequisites: Must be 17 years of age or become 17 years of age prior to completion of the course.

    This course prepares Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) to work in fire departments, rescue squads, and other frontline emergency teams. The focus of the Emergency Medical Responder is to initiate immediate lifesaving care to critical patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide lifesaving interventions while awaiting EDMS response and to assist higher-level personnel at the scene and during transport. Emergency Medical Responders function as part of a comprehensive EMS response under medical oversight. Emergency Medical Responders perform basic interventions with minimal equipment. This course provides foundational knowledge essential for success in the EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic Programs. This course prepares students to take the National Registry Examination. A state background check and drug screen are required before students may take the exam. The exam must be taken within two years of completing this course. It is recommended that the exam be taken within three weeks of course completion. 4 hours lecture.

    EMSR 0100 Emergency Medical Responder is only offered as a dual enrollment course at high schools in the DSCC service area.
