Course Descriptions


DSCC courses are offered in rotation. The frequency of course offerings is designated by (F) for fall semester, (Sp) for spring semester, (Su) for summer semester, or As Needed; location is designated by (Dyersburg) for Dyersburg, (GCC) for DSCC Gibson County Center and (JNC) for DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County. The frequency and location of courses are listed in the following descriptions; while DSCC makes every attempt to offer courses as indicated, course offerings and locations are subject to change.

Some courses offered at Dyersburg State Community College are designed for transfer for completion of a bachelor’s degree while other courses focus on specific career skills rather than for transfer. Courses to increase career skills are designated as **Not Part of a Tennessee Transfer Pathway** in the course description.

    This course is a study of more complex four-part harmonic progressions in all chord positions including chords with added ninths, elevenths and thirteenths.     Prerequisites: First inform your doctor and observe these guidelines: 1) Under 30: You can start exercising if you have had a checkup within the past year and the doctor found nothing wrong with you. 2) Between 30 & 39: You should have a checkup within three months before you start exercising. The examination should include an electrocardiogram [EKG] taken at rest. 3) Between 40 & 49: Same as for the 30-39 group with one important addition. Your doctor should also take an EKG to check your heart while you are exercising. [This is called a stress test.] Your pulse rate during this test should approach the level it would during aerobic workouts.

    This course focuses on the principles of aerobic conditioning designed to promote heart-lung endurance. The total fitness concept combines simple dance steps with up-tempo aerobic movements, resulting in a complete conditioning program. 2 hours per week.
