**Not Part of a Tennessee Transfer Pathway**

Sp - Online
Prerequisites: HIMT 1303 HIMT 2302 HIMT 2301

Co-requisites: HIMT 2303

This practicum course provides practical experience in medical coding and billing, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. Students will engage in exercises that simulate the daily responsibilities of coding professionals in healthcare settings. The curriculum emphasizes the use of industry-standard coding systems, such as ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II, alongside billing processes and claims management. (This course has a course fee for AAPC Practicode). (This course should be taken in the student’s last semester).

Note: This course is designed as a simulation. However, a request to complete a portion of the practicum at the healthcare facility will be considered. The student should request placement at a healthcare facility at least 6 weeks before the course begins.

Note: Students enrolled in the professional practice experience at a health care facility will be subject to a criminal background check and a drug screen required by most clinical facilities for assurance of patient safety. Based on the results of the criminal background check and drug screen, an affiliated clinical site may deny a student’s presence at their facility. Many healthcare facilities will not hire individuals with adverse background checks and/or drugs screens.

Students enrolled in professional practice courses or practicum courses that attend a healthcare facility may be required to provide proof of current immunizations as well as a negative Tuberculosis (TB) skin test or chest X-ray as determined by a physician. Healthcare facilities may have additional requirements including the COVID-19 vaccine. 2 hours lecture.
