The Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Sciences provides a pathway for students who are currently enrolled in or have completed a certificate-level program in a Health Sciences discipline from any accredited community or technical college, or who are currently credentialed as allied health/nursing practitioners, to continue their formal education and earn an Associate of Applied Science degree.

Allied Health Sciences discipline-specific core credits may be earned by current enrollment in appropriate Allied Health Sciences courses, transferring credits earned in a health science-releated program or an allied health sciences certficiate program from a community college, or portfolio assessment of college-leve learning related to an allied health discipline.

Certificates that can be applied toward this degree include:

  • Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Certificate
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate
  • Electronic Health Record Certificate
  • Healthcare Technician (CCMA) Certificate
  • Medical Coding (CCA) Certificate
  • Paramedic Certificate

The CCMA is not a DSCC certificate.  It is an industry-recognized certificate the student can receive by completing the Healthcare Technician certificate which is the name of the DSCC awarded certificate.  Also, CCA has been added by the Medical Coding certificate.  CCA is the industry-recognized certification a student can receive for completing the Medical Coding DSCC-awarded certificate.

This major is specifically designed for students who plan to enter the workforce after graduation.

To facilitate success in this program, all students should enroll in ORN 1010 - Orientation: Learning to Succeed  during their first semester at DSCC.

Major/Concentration Codes: AHSM-AHSC
