Special Education Emphasis (Tennessee Transfer Pathway), A.S.T.


The Special Education emphasis provides students various foundational courses in the field of special education. The student completes the first two years of requirements leading toward a baccalaureate degree.

To facilitate success in this program, all students should enroll in ORN 1010 - Orientation: Learning to Succeed  during their first semester at DSCC.

Footnotes:

(1) Students who plan to transfer to UTK are encouraged to complete one U.S. History course and one non-U.S. History course as part of this requirement.

(2) One General Education Natural Science course must be in Biology. One General Education Natural Science course must be in Physical Science.

(3) Mathematics General Education course be a general education Mathematics elective Math 1530 or higher.

(4) One general education natural science elective must be a lab-based course other than Biology or Physical Science.

(6) One course must be in literature.

Students earning an AST degree must meet the following additional degree requirements:

  1. Attainment of a 2.75 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
  2. ACT composite score of 21 (or SAT score of 1080) or higher or successful completion of approved standardized examination. (Praxis Core) for admission to the university’s College of Education. Satisfactory ratings on an index of suitability for the teaching profession (DSCC AST Disposition Assessment Form).

Students transferring to a public university in Tennessee may need to meet additional requirements to gain admittance to the university.
