Chemistry Emphasis (Tennessee Transfer Pathway), A.S.

The Chemistry emphasis provides the student with the basic skills in preparation for advanced chemical principles. This curriculum includes transfer credits that satisfy the requirements of the first two years in chemistry. Generally, this program provides the student with an understanding of the material world, with knowledge of the ever-changing processes of life, with the skills of inquiry necessary for work in chemistry, and with an understanding of the ethical responsibilities of being a scientist. Students enrolling in the Chemistry emphasis should plan to pursue a baccalaureate degree with a major in chemistry that prepares them for opportunities in such diverse areas as secondary teaching, laboratory science, industrial research, the allied health fields and chemical engineering.

To facilitate success in this program, all students should enroll in ORN 1010 - Orientation: Learning to Succeed  during their first semester at DSCC.

Major/Concentration Codes: UTPS-UCH

Additional Degree Requirement:

Total: 65 Semester Hours

*For lists of eligible electives, see the appropriate section of the General Education Core Curriculum Requirements.

**Students transferring to UTK must also complete a non-US History sequence. TTU requires a US History course prior to transfer.

***Students have a choice of courses to take in Math based on the transferring institution’s requirements. Series A includes taking: Math 1730 Precalculus AND Math 1910: Calculus I OR Series B includes: Math 1910 Calculus I AND Math 1920 Calculus II. You must complete both courses in the series. The first course will meet the General Education Math requirement, AND the second course will complete the Area of Emphasis requirement. UTK requires Series B.

****For specific concentrations in Chemistry, PHYS 2110/2120 Calculus-based Physics I & II may be required. Check with the university to which you plan to transfer for specific requirements.

Note: During the sophomore year, students planning to teach should meet the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core) or ACT testing requirements for their transfer institution.

Additional information regarding foreign language:

At some universities, foreign language may be required in certain programs that lead to the Bachelor of Science degree. Complete information regarding foreign language requirements at each university may be found on the transfer and articulation websites of the Tennessee Board of Regents and the University of Tennessee Systems. Community college students are encouraged to be familiar with foreign language requirements at the universities and, if applicable, complete the requirements before transferring.
