Course Descriptions


DSCC courses are offered in rotation. The frequency of course offerings is designated by (F) for fall semester, (Sp) for spring semester, (Su) for summer semester, or As Needed; location is designated by (Dyersburg) for Dyersburg, (GCC) for DSCC Gibson County Center and (JNC) for DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County. The frequency and location of courses are listed in the following descriptions; while DSCC makes every attempt to offer courses as indicated, course offerings and locations are subject to change.

Some courses offered at DSCC are designed for transfer for completion of a bachelor’s degree while other courses focus on specific career skills rather than meeting requirements for transfer. Courses to increase career skills are designated as **Not Part of a Tennessee Transfer Pathway** in the course description.

    This course is intended to give students an overview of the basic principles of physics and the scientific process. It focuses on a conceptual survey of topics in physics including fundamentals of motion, forces, energy, momentum, waves and heat. It also has a laboratory component.     This course is an introduction to the concepts, principles and methods of physics using algebra and trigonometry for pre-medical, pre-dental, engineering, and science students. Emphasis is placed on experiences, experiments, demonstrations and use of multimedia resources to understand and apply in different situations the laws of motion, description of motion and forces, work, energy and the law of conservation of energy, linear momentum, circular motion, angular momentum, fluids, and thermal physics. The student is oriented toward integrating conceptual understanding with analytical skills using plain language with simple mathematics.     This course prepares social work students for cultural competency skills in working with all types of populations. The focus of the course is a combination of factual information on various populations and specific social work skills to effectively work with different racial and ethnic persons. It also addresses the societal issues with discrimination and prejudice within the operation of society. Oppression of disadvantaged groups is examined on both the micro and macro levels of society.
