Course Descriptions


DSCC courses are offered in rotation. The frequency of course offerings is designated by (F) for fall semester, (Sp) for spring semester, (Su) for summer semester, or As Needed; location is designated by (Dyersburg) for Dyersburg, (GCC) for DSCC Gibson County Center and (JNC) for DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center at Tipton County. The frequency and location of courses are listed in the following descriptions; while DSCC makes every attempt to offer courses as indicated, course offerings and locations are subject to change.

Some courses offered at DSCC are designed for transfer for completion of a bachelor’s degree while other courses focus on specific career skills rather than meeting requirements for transfer. Courses to increase career skills are designated as **Not Part of a Tennessee Transfer Pathway** in the course description.

    This course is an examination of the development of computing technology and terminology.     This course is a directed internship designed to offer students the opportunity to pursue work experience with a criminal justice agency and to develop practical work-related skills and integrate classroom knowledge and theories.     This course prepares Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) to work in fire departments, rescue squads, and other frontline emergency teams. The focus of the Emergency Medical Responder is to initiate immediate lifesaving care to critical patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide lifesaving interventions while awaiting EDMS response and to assist higher-level personnel at the scene and during transport. Emergency Medical Responders function as part of a comprehensive EMS response under medical oversight. Emergency Medical Responders perform basic interventions with minimal equipment. This course provides foundational knowledge essential for success in the EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic Programs. This course prepares students to take the National Registry Examination. A state background check and drug screen are required before students may take the exam. The exam must be taken within two years of completing this course.     This course focuses on advanced topics in healthcare reimbursement. The course includes an introduction to third party payers, revenue cycle management and charge master development and administration. It also focuses on principles of healthcare reimbursement, including health insurance plans, government-sponsored healthcare programs, managed care plans, fee schedules, resource based relative value system for physician payment and prospective payment for various healthcare settings. 2 hours lecture.
